FAQ

Employment at UZH / Fees

My employment at UZH does not cover the entire duration of the program. Can I still take part in the CAS UZH in Higher Education at reduced course fees?

If you are not employed at UZH for individual semesters and are therefore not considered a UZH employee, you will be charged the price for external participants on a pro rata basis for these semesters.

Are external persons (i.e. non-UZH members) also admitted to the Teaching Skills program?

No, the Teaching Skills program is explicitly aimed at members of UZH who work in undergraduate teaching (Bachelor’s/Master’s level). Employees of other universities are not admitted. Instructors from other universities can attend the CAS UZH in Higher Education.

Will the reduced course fees (CHF 1000.- or CHF 4350.-) be halved if I have already completed the Teaching Skills program and therefore only attend the second part of the CAS UZH in Higher Education (modules Teaching Innovation, Leading, Counseling and Supervising in Teaching and Teaching Project and Final Colloquium)?

No. The Teaching Skills program is free of charge for UZH employees, which is why the regulations do not provide for any further reduction.

Which positions at UZH are considered junior academic positions?

According to the UZH classification guidelines, assistant, senior assistant, doctoral and postdoc positions are considered qualification positions.

Teaching

My teaching does not cover the entire duration of the degree program. Can I still take part in the CAS UZH in Higher Education or the Teaching Skills program?

To successfully participate in the programs, you must be able to carry out the tasks required in the various modules (e.g. peer observation) as part of your teaching activities. For this, it is not necessary for you to teach every semester. However, you must ensure that you complete the teaching duties to the required extent by the end of the training program.

Is teaching that is carried out at other universities recognized as teaching duties in the Teaching Skills program or in the CAS UZH in Higher Education?

Participants in the Teaching Skills program must complete all the required teaching duties in undergraduate teaching (Bachelor's/Master's level) at UZH.
External participants in the CAS UZH in Higher Education can have teaching completed at other universities recognized as teaching duties.
Internal participants in the CAS UZH in Higher Education must complete half of the required teaching duties in undergraduate teaching (Bachelor's/Master's level) at UZH in order to benefit from reduced course fees.

Are workshops and courses outside of undergraduate teaching (e.g., as part of doctoral programs or in continuing education) counted as teaching duties?

Participants in the Teaching Skills program must complete all required teaching work in undergraduate teaching at UZH.
External participants in the CAS UZH in Higher Education can complete the required teaching duties outside of undergraduate teaching.
Internal participants in the CAS UZH in Higher Education must complete half of the required teaching duties in undergraduate teaching (Bachelor's/Master's level) at UZH in order to benefit from reduced course fees.

To what extent is teaching in team teaching credited?

In principle, all courses in which you are active yourself are fully credited. If the course is split, you will receive credit for the lessons that you teach yourself.

Language Skills

Are the CAS UZH in Higher Education and the Teaching Skills program also offered in English?

Starting in Fall 2025, the CAS UZH in Higher Education is also offered in English. The program language switches annually between German and English.
The Teaching Skills program in general takes place in German from the start of the spring semester and in English from the start of the fall semester.

What German or English language level do I need to follow the Teaching Skills program or the CAS in Higher Education?

Unless otherwise stated, intermediate-level language skills in the stated course language with regard to understanding, speaking, and reading are required to participate in the program. Contributions and course assessments may be submitted in both German and/or English.
