The university's continuing education offering falls into two categories: programs and courses:
The programs lead to a qualification or title from the University of Zurich. Given that the programs are embedded in the European credit point system (ECTS), course participants are guaranteed transparency and can be sure that their qualification or title will be comparable internationally.
Continuing education programs are generally geared to people with a degree of a higher education institution and professional experience. In exceptional cases, people with equivalent qualifications and relevant professional experience may be admitted at the discretion of the program coordinator.
MAS programs (formerly "NDS" postgraduate diploma programs) are the highest continuing education qualifications available, and lead to conferral of an academic title. They provide comprehensive training in the relevant field, giving participants either an additional qualification in their own profession or a basis for working in another area. MAS programs generally last two or more years, and require a final thesis in addition to in-class learning units and independent study. Most are offered on a part-time basis and require at least 60 ECTS points, which corresponds to a workload of 1,800 hours (including independent study). The official title is University of Zurich Master of Advanced Studies. An MAS does not automatically entitle the holder to be admitted to doctoral studies.
DAS programs are a new type of continuing education program that are less extensive than the MAS. They provide in-depth training in a specific area, giving participants an additional qualification in their own field or a new one. DAS programs generally last one to two years and often require a final thesis in addition to in-class learning units and independent study. They are offered on a part-time basis and require at least 30 ECTS points, which corresponds to a workload of 900 hours (including independent study). The official title is University of Zurich Diploma of Advanced Studies.
CAS programs (formerly "NDK" postgraduate diploma courses) are the lowest-level continuing education qualifications offered in Switzerland. They provide specific knowledge of a topic and enable an additional qualification to be acquired in a specific field. CAS programs generally last a few months to one year, and sometimes require a short project in addition to in-class learning units and independent study. They are offered on a part-time basis and require at least 10 ECTS points, which corresponds to a workload of 300 hours (including independent study). The official title is University of Zurich Certificate of Advanced Studies.
Continuing education courses provide subject-specific knowledge for select groups of professionals or general content for all groups interested in academic and scientific topics. Courses run one or more days and generally do not involve any assessments, only in-class learning. Participants receive confirmation of participation on request. Subject-specific courses are geared to select groups of professionals, while courses on general topics are open to anyone interested. A university degree is not normally required to participate.
