Beschreibung |
Thema English is a globally diversified language with countless regional, social and ethnic varieties. Referring to the «Complaint Tradition» in English, we introduce processes of standardization and identity-formation, illustrated with selected communities (South Africa, Singapore, United States, etc.). We discuss how English has developed locally, as a result of British legacy and contact with other languages, and how varieties are evaluated socially: what attitudes prevail, what consequences arise from language attitudes, and how language is used as an emblem of local identity for speakers? We provide historical and sociolinguistic input, give a theoretical and methodological introduction to perceptual dialectology, make literature recommendations and together, we develop materials and suggest relevant topics for in-class work.
