Thema
In this course, we are going to read, discuss and plan lessons around the works of a new generation of Nigerian literary artists. These writers – Wole Talabi, Logan February, and Oyinkan Braithwaite among them – have produced works of exceptional emotive power and intellectual acuity, but are rarely read in Swiss high school English classrooms. We are thus going to expand our literary horizons and do so by applying competence-oriented teaching, a staple in English-language teaching curricula around Switzerland. Course participants will gain new insights into the history and contemporary literature of a vibrant African country, engage with a host of salient, classroom-friendly literary texts, and receive ready-to-use, competence-oriented materials.

Inhalte und Ziele
  • Overview of Nigerian literature and literary history, with a special focus on contemporary Nigerian fiction writing
  • Input on competence-oriented teaching as a curricular framework and hands-on tool for lesson planning
  • Inspiration for future lesson planning
  • Broadening of our reading horizons, sharing an edifying aesthetic experience by reading and discussing some of the best literature out there

Methoden
Inputs, plenary discussions, group work designing a multi-lesson literature sequence, applying competence-oriented teaching methodology, presentations and feedback, ready-to-use materials for all levels of high school, reading list for further exploration
